Rainforests safely store billions of tons of carbon, helping ward off climate change. But when they are cleared or burned, much of that carbon ends up in the atmosphere—similar to burning fossil fuels. This destabilizes the planet’s climate and contributes to rising temperatures, stronger storms, more severe droughts and rising sea levels.
Each year, deforestation of tropical forests releases more carbon into Earth’s atmosphere than the emissions from the whole US transportation sector.

Rainforest Trust was founded 30 years ago with the mission to save our world’s most vulnerable tropical rainforests and endangered species. It has become increasingly clear that this approach is the simplest, most cost-effective way to keep carbon stored and fight climate change.
Together, we hope to permanently lock up 15 billion tons of carbon by 2025 and create a healthier future for our planet and all who rely on it.
