Criteria for Supporting Intact Landscape Projects
Required. The proposed protected area:
- Must be between the Tropics of Cancer and Capricorn.
- Must not have any roads, unless access on those roads is strictly controlled and only for protected area management and/or tourism; where applicable, applications must present a completed road management plan that includes strict access & enforcement actions, or must outline the activities to complete such a plan during project implementation.
Recommended. It is best if the proposed protected area:
- Is within an existing Intact Forest Landscape as defined by Potopov et al. 2017 and Potopov et al. 2008, and available for viewing and downloading at Global Forest Watch. If the proposed protected area is within another biome not represented by the Intact Forest Landscapes dataset (e.g. grasslands), applicants must justify why it qualifies as “intact”, along the lines of the criteria used to define Intact Landscapes (e.g. no signs of human activities or habitat fragmentation; large enough to maintain native biological diversity, including viable populations of wide-ranging species). Marine Protected Areas and deserts will not be considered under the Intact Landscape criteria.
- Consists of a single polygon, without holes or unprotected inholdings, of at least 1 million acres. Proposed areas of this size or larger will be prioritized. Smaller areas will be considered if applicants can demonstrate the proposed protected area is of high conservation value (e.g. also provides substantial benefit to one or more CR/EN species).
- Connects to an existing KBA or WDPA.
