Saving the Brazilian Amazon—One Football Pitch at a Time!
Over the weekend of 3rd – 5th February, millions of football fans and over 80 professional clubs are taking part in the Green Football Weekend—a new national event of football-related fun and climate-friendly activities to help protect our planet. Rainforest Trust UK are asking football fans to pledge to donate a certain amount for every goal scored in the Premier League and Women’s Super League during the Green Football Weekend.
The more you pledge, and the more goals are scored, the more rainforest you save!
It only costs £1.50 to save an area of the Brazilian Amazon the size of a full-size football pitch (which is about 1.75 acres). For example, if you pledge to donate 75p for each goal scored, and over the weekend 40 goals hit the back of the net in both leagues, your donation will be £30. If 48 goals are scored, then your gift will be £36. (The average number of goals scored every weekend in both leagues this season is 49).

Saving the Brazilian Amazon And Your Climate Impact
All donations will be directed to our exciting new project to save the Amazon Rainforest in Brazil. Every football pitch of rainforest saved in our Brazilian Amazon project will safely store around 500 metric tonnes of CO2e — which is equivalent to the annual emissions of 108 cars! And with tropical deforestation accounting for up to 15% of net global carbon emissions, there is no more cost-effective way to fight climate change than to save a few football pitches of rainforest.
Rainforest Trust UK guarantees that 100% of every donation (excluding transaction fees) raised through our Green Football Weekend campaign will be used for direct conservation action, saving thousands of football pitches of rainforest for the benefit of species, communities and the climate. We can make this 100% promise as all our marketing and staff costs are covered through donations from our Board of Trustees and Gift Aid.
You can find out more about other climate-friendly activities taking place during the Green Football Weekend by clicking here or on social media via the hashtag #greenfootballweekend.
And if you have any questions, please email us at UK@rainforesttrust.org and we’d be happy to help.
Why Is Saving Rainforests So Important For The Planet?
You may have seen news headlines saying that a football pitch-sized area of rainforest is lost every six seconds. That’s ten football pitches every minute, or 14,400 per day. And nowhere has suffered more destruction in recent years than the Amazon rainforest in Brazil, where deforestation rates are at their highest for 14 years.
When rainforests are burnt to create farmland, millions of tonnes of carbon enters the atmosphere as the dangerous greenhouse gas CO2, which is the principal cause of climate change. This destruction of precious habitat such as the Amazon rainforest is also driving thousands of species towards extinction, and depriving Indigenous communities of their homes and livelihoods.
