OUR PROJECTS

Project 1- Land Aquisition
Our main focus project has always been located in the country of Belize in Central America. Our goal is quite simple. Purchase large areas of pristine rainforest in beautiful, undeveloped Belize in order to save this rainforest from the increasing threat of destruction. Through our own efforts and with the aid of hardworking volunteers and kind donations from sympathetic members and supporters, we have been able to purchase a significant amount of land over the years. But time is of the essence. With an absolutely catastrophic rate of forest depletion each year, we are in a desperate race against the clock to purchase and preserve more rainforest before it is ruthlessly destroyed.

We are proud and happy to say that to date, with the support of members and donors over the years, we have managed to accquire over 2,000 acres of pristine rainforest in Belize. This land is now officially protected by our organization and an onsite local volunteer, but this cannot be done with out your help. Please help us to save our planet's fragile ecosystems. We need to preserve our rare and valuable trees, plants and flowers and to save our many endangered species of animals and other wildlife, as well as their threatened habitats, before it's to late. If you believe in our project and our cause, please help to support us by becoming a member of our organization.

Project 2 - Jaguar Sanctuary
All of the land we purchase becomes part of the Macal River Rainforest Preserve and Jaguar Sanctuary. We are currently trying to enforce these boundaries with the help of a local Mayan Indian volunteer ranger. We desperately need to deter armed poachers, illegal loggers, oil and mining prospectors and archaeological looters, from illegally entering this section of rainforest, which is now a Preserve and Wildlife Sanctuary. We need your help to hire and train more indigenous Mayan Indians as Rangers to help protect this area. Not just for the sake of the Jaguar, but for all of the animals of the rainforest. So that theyn will be able to exisit here in their own habitats safe from harm.

We currently have plans to build a small ranger station on the corner of the property closest to the nearest jungle road. This would provide much needed shelter and a safe place for our rangers to work from. If you believe in this project and cause, please help support us by becoming a member of our organization.

Project 1 - Petition to save Cockpit Country
Dear Fellow Jamaicans; as you may already know, Cockpit Country is the largest remaining primary forest in Jamaica. It is a last refuge for indigenous animals and plants increasingly displaced by human settlement and development. It is an internationally-recognized biological treasure area, sustains the water supply of most of western Jamaica, and contributes significantly to the sustainability of the critical tourism sector.

This precious and most vital resource, is however being threatened by the prospect of bauxite mining in the region; and if this incessant deforestation and contamination of our water supply is permitted in this area, we will be forced to find a new slogan for Jamaica, one to replace "land of wood and water."

We are therefore asking you to join in the effort to preserve the Cockpit Country area by simply forwarding this email to every Jamaican you knows, and by a pledge of your support for the following petition:

  • 1- We, the undersigned, are appealing to the Government of Jamaica NOT TO ALLOW prospecting or mining in the Cockpit Country and environs.

  • 2- We call on the Minister of Agriculture and Lands to declare the area identified as Cockpit Country CLOSED to mining or prospecting.

  • 3- We urge the Government of Jamaica to take steps to declare the Cockpit Country a Protected National Area AS A MATTER OF PRIORITY, as stipulated in the 1997 Policy for a National System of Protected Areas in Jamaica.

To pledge your support for the Petition, please copy and fax the Petition along with your name, signature and contact info. to 876-926-0212.

You may also submit the Petition by email to: jamlink@gmail.com * Please be sure to include "Petition to save Cockpit County" in the subject area of your email.

Thank you in advance for your support.

Project 2 - Petition to protect Winnifred Beach for the People of Jamaica
Winnifred Beach located in the community of Fairy Hill close to Port Antonio in Jamaica and is one of the island's last remaining true public beaches. Jamaicans and visitors to the island have enjoyed the white sands, pristine waters and laid back atmosphere for many years. Beach vendors have been earning their living on the beach with items ranging from trinkets to some good and hearty Jamaican cuisine. Nothing is more wonderful than to experience Jamaicans and foreign tourists enjoying this beach together and seeing true community tourism at work. All this is to change if the Urban Development Corporation, an agency of the Government of Jamaica, is to have its way. Their proposal envisions beach cottages as well as luxury villas which will have several negative impacts on the area. To start with there will be environmental degradation which will lead to habitat loss for many species of birds as well as for the endangered Hawksbill Turtle, which nests in the area. There will also be more strain on marine life and the coral reef which is already suffering from the impact of housing developments in the area. In addition to the negative environmental impact there will be severe negative social impacts as the citizens of Jamaica loose yet another of their beaches to unsustainable development. We believe that preserving Winnifred Beach as a public beach is important in the fight for Jamaicans to retain their beaches all over the island and as such can set a precedent. We call for the Urban Development Corporation proposal for Fairy Hill and Winnifred Beach to be withdrawn in its entirety, for the status of Winnifred Beach to be firmly declared as a public beach with no possibility of privatisation in the future, for the area to be declared a conservation zone and for the Jamaican government tourism product development agency to assist the Fairy Hill Community with the sustainable management of the beach with a view to the preservation of the beach for the people of Jamaica and visitors to this island forever.
