Foundation
The Rainforest Trust was founded on the 26th July, 1995, by two friends who had first met in 1979 while students at Princeton University. Brett Ashmeade-Hawkins, Plantation Owner, and the late Jay Hernandez-Leal, Attorney-At-Law, both became determined to help save the rainforest from further senseless destruction. Sadly, Jay died suddenly of a Heart Attack in Miami in August, 1996, at the age of only 39, and he never lived to see his dream fulfilled.
However, Brett Ashmeade-Hawkins, joined by his younger brother, Mark, and a small but dedicated group of unpaid volunteers, has lead and managed projects that are in effect in Belize and in other parts of Latin America and the Caribbean that are now saving the rainforest. Our struggle is made difficult by financial challenges and the Rainforest Trust relies on the world wide community to help support our cause through donations and volunteer work in order to accomplish our goals.
